Today we received word that the new law allowing night bowfishing statewide and the rough fish tournament exemption from the DNR permit system will actually go into effect July 1st! This is officially coming from MNDNR Ed Boggess, NR Asst Division Director. It was recently deemed that because there were two appropriation bills in the game and fish bill, all appropriation laws go into effect July 1st, the entire game and fish bill that was signed into law by Governor Pawlenty takes effect 07-01-09 at 12:00 am. This also means the 65 db rating and the setbacks, 150 feet from occupied structures and 300 feet from campsites, will also go into effect on July 1st. Congrats everyone……...We are all very deserving of this and I hope you all enjoy a new chapter for MN bowfishing!
It is safe to say that this legislative session was a huge success for the sport of bowfishing and the LLBA as we are working towards the same privileges as many bowfishermen/women have across the US. This most certainly was the result of a lot of support from many and anyone who bowfishes in MN owes a great deal of gratitude to these folks. First I would like to thank Senator Chaudhary for all of his efforts with the bowfishing bill and the fishing contest bill. Senator Chaudhary is a man who believes in good conservation practices and from day one has seen the sport of bowfishing as a benefit for MN waters and sportsmen/women. We also need to thank Rep. McNamara, Rep. Dill, and Rep. Howes for helping us with the bills in the house. And to all of the co-authors who provided support and assistance throughout the entire process; Senators Ingebrigtsen, Saxhaug, Fobbe, and Fischbach and Representatives Jackson, Dittrich, Cornish, Persell, and Sailer. We also owe a big thanks to the Minnesota Outdoor Heritage Alliance (MOHA) and their president Don McMillian for being the first of many to help us get things accomplished, to Garry Leaf from Sportsmen for Change for helping us get the word out about our cause, to Vern Wagner (along with the group) from Anglers for Habitat for his excellent work on the fishing contest bill, and to Dennis Anderson from the Mpls. Star Tribune for telling our story. And of course to the many who testified and wrote their legislators seeking support. I am happy with the professional approach that was taken by many of you and the proof is in our accomplishments!
As I have said in the past we are extremely fortunate to have these great people around us and I would ask you all to take the time and personally thank them. We still have some work to be done in the future and rest assured that the LLBA will be at the front lines working hard. If you have any questions please feel free to let me know.
Sincerely,
Brian Petschl
LLBA President
